Copper and Brass in architecture

Nordic Copper: Innovative Architectural Copper and Brass Solutions by Aurubis

Aurubis’ Nordic Copper product range offers a versatile and sustainable solution for architectural applications, including interior, facades and roofs. These products are renowned for their factory-applied surface treatments, which provide copper and brass with various stages of oxidation and patination immediately. This ensures a unique and aesthetically pleasing appearance from the moment of installation.

Nordic Copper products are designed to meet the needs of modern architecture, offering durability, formability, and a long lifecycle. The range includes pre-patinated options like Nordic Blue, Nordic Green, and Nordic Turquoise, as well as pre-oxidized Nordic Brown and mill-finish Nordic Standard. Additionally, Aurubis offers innovative alloys such as Nordic Brass, Nordic Bronze, and Nordic Royal, each with distinct visual and performance characteristics

Aurubis’ commitment to sustainability is evident in their use of 100% recycled raw materials for manufacturing these products. Copper’s ability to be recycled repeatedly without any loss in performance makes it an ideal choice for environmentally conscious building projects. This sustainable approach ensures that Nordic Copper products contribute to a responsible legacy for future generations.

Nordic Standard

Nordic Standard is mill-finish copper without any surface treatments. The material has the traditional bright finish that will oxidise in the environment.

Nordic Brown

Nordic Brown provides the same oxidised brown surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment. The Nordic Brown range is pre-oxidised copper available in two colours: Nordic Brown and Nordic Brown Light. The thickness of the oxide layer determines the color of the surface finish. Both Nordic Brown surface finishes are useful to minimize hand and other construction marks which can occur for a short time after the installation of bright Nordic Standard copper.

Nordic Brass

Nordic Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a distinctive golden yellow color. Nordic Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a distinctive golden yellow color.

Nordic Brass Weathered

Nordic Brass Weathered material is burnished at the Aurubis mill to immediately provide the same oxidised brown surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment.

Nordic Bronze

Nordic Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin with a color similar to Nordic Standard.

Nordic Royal

Nordic Royal is an alloy of copper, aluminum and zinc, with a rich golden through-color.

Nordic Green

Nordic Green products provide the same green patina that naturally develops over time in the environment. Nordic Green material is pre-patinated copper and is available in three colours: Nordic Green Traditional, Nordic Green Living 1 and Nordic Green Livivng 2. Different intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark-oxidized background material, enabling architects to determine the type and intensity of the green patina with choices of Nordic Green Living surface finishes.

Nordic Blue

Nordic Blue products provide the same blue patinated surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment. Nordic Blue products are pre-patinated and this range contains five colours: Nordic Blue Traditional, Nordic Blue Living 1, Nordic Blue Living 2, Nordic Blue Living 3 and Nordic Turquoise. Different intensities of patina flecks can be created, revealing some of the dark-oxidised background material, enabling architects to determine the type and intensity of the blue patina with choices of Nordic Blue Living surface finishes.

Benefits of Nordic Copper

Nordic Copper offers several benefits for architectural applications, making it a popular choice for facades and roofs. Here are some key advantages:

  1. Durability and Longevity: Copper is known for its exceptional lifespan, demonstrated over hundreds of years. Nordic Copper products are protected by their natural patina, which provides resistance against corrosion in various atmospheric conditions
  2. Low Maintenance: The patina that forms on copper surfaces acts as a protective layer, ensuring that the material remains durable and problem-free with minimal maintenance
  3. Aesthetic Appeal: Nordic Copper is available in a variety of vibrant colors and finishes, including pre-patinated options like Nordic Blue, Nordic Green, and Nordic Turquoise, as well as pre-oxidized Nordic Brown and mill-finish Nordic Standard. These options allow architects to achieve unique and visually striking designs
  4. Sustainability: Copper is a naturally occurring element that can be recycled repeatedly without any loss in performance. Aurubis manufactures Nordic Copper products using 100% recycled raw materials, making them an environmentally responsible choice
  5. Formability: Copper can be easily formed mechanically or by hand to suit virtually any three-dimensional shape, including complex curves and details. This flexibility makes it ideal for innovative architectural designs
  6. Thermal and Acoustic Properties: Copper has low thermal movement and a high melting point, which prevents stretching in hot weather. Additionally, it provides excellent acoustic insulation, contributing to a comfortable indoor environment

Overall, Nordic Copper combines aesthetic versatility, durability, and sustainability, making it a valuable material for modern architectural projects.
